Full-time Lead Mechanic

Overview

Lead mechanics at the Boise Bicycle Project (BBP) play a vital role in refurbishing bicycles, performing repairs, and providing bicycle education to our patrons in our DIY bike shop. They collaborate with the Director of Shop Operations and Lead Mechanic to achieve impact goals, ensuring that safe, reliable, serviceable, affordable, and fun bicycles are available to the community. In addition, lead mechanics offer sales support and exceptional customer service.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

DIY Repair and Shop User Experience (50%)

  • Collaborate with patrons and members on their projects in the DIY shop.

  • Educate and empower customers to complete their own bicycle projects, embracing BBP's mission to serve a diverse community.

  • Foster a positive, empowering, and educational shop experience for staff, volunteers, and members.

  • Deliver top-notch customer service and sales support in BBP’s retail space.

Refurbish Donated Bicycles (30%)

  • Exhibit strong mechanical and diagnostic skills, proficiently working on bicycles of all makes and conditions.

  • Efficiently refurbish donated bicycles in line with BBP standards.

  • Perform bicycle safety checks and diagnose mechanical issues to ensure the highest quality of refurbished bikes.

Intake and process donated bicycles and accessories (10%)

  • Interact with community supporters and bicycle donors as a BBP ambassador

  • Make real-time decisions on the future impact of donations

  • Assist in facilitating the warehousing and processing of donations in a smooth and organized manner

Shop Education Assistant (10%)

  • Assist the Shop Coordinator with curriculum development and classroom instruction

    • BBP Member Classes

    • Volunteer Classes

    • FEM Night

    • Cross-Promotional Events

Additional Responsibilities

  • Select and pull bicycles for refurbishment and sale on the sales floor.

  • Act as the go-to mechanic for advanced problem-solving in the DIY shop and sales floor.

  • Support other mechanics and provide guidance, especially in the absence of a director or other lead mechanic.

  • Make decisions in a timely manner that enhance the business and align with BBP's mission.

  • Ensure timely completion of bicycles on bike build days, contributing to BBP’s mission and goals.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Passion for teamwork and adept communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, enjoying interaction with people from diverse backgrounds and ability levels.

  • At least three years of professional experience working on a wide variety of bicycles, or a combination of work experience and coursework at UBI or a similar bicycle institute

Starting salary: $18.50-$20/hour based upon experience, 32-40 hours a week
