Boise Bicycle Project’s

2025 Annual Report

A Letter From Our Executive Director

In 2025, the Boise Bicycle Project was able to make huge impact while also demonstrating the true strength of what a connected, service minded community can do. Sitting in our empty shop space, it’s hard to believe how many community members come through these doors every single week, much less the incredible impact we are able to make together - 1,700 bicycles distributed per year, 2,500 people served in our shop space, roughly 1,000 met where they are at in the community, Boise’s first Traffic Garden space,  expanding life changing programs for young people and incarcerated women.

All of this work is truly only possible with a huge network of good-faith actors who draw from their own lived experiences to support other people. The most powerful example of this occurred at this year’s Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway event, when we were able to pair our 15,000th donated bicycle with a kiddo who had previously only dreamed of owning one.

Stand alone, 15,000 is a staggering figure, but when you start to think about the number of hands that are involved to distribute even one of those bicycles - donating it, processing it, teaching someone to fix it, fixing it, decorating it, safety lessons - all until it makes it to that kid… we’re talking dozens of hands for each bicycle. Dozens of people who show up to make sure that another person has access to opportunity, to connection, to freedom and joy.

Then when you take the turn, and think about how for each one of those 15,000 bicycles there’s dozens of people involved to make it a reality, you begin to see the scope and strength of a community that shows up for each other no matter what, that rallies around bicycles and understands the importance of how we show up for each other in that process - and you start to realize that it’s literally hundreds of thousands of people who show up for one another, who do the right thing, and invest into a community of inclusivity and support… and that with that many engaged community members we can do incredible things.

So looking to 2026, we’re galvanized by a community that shows up no matter what, that lives up to our values and is ready to lean in with our shared strength and continue to make a community wide impact, one bicycle at a time, one person at a time.

2025 Impact Highlights

Our Mission

We are a community-focused nonprofit that promotes the personal, social, and environmental benefits of bicycling. Through inclusive access to refurbished bicycles, repair, educational experiences, and advocacy, we strive to build a stronger bicycling community.

We believe that Boise has the potential to be the bicycling capital of America, a place where everyone can experience the freedom and countless opportunities a bicycle can create.

Each of these bikes represents so much more than just a tool for transportation. It’s the power of our community working together and hundreds of people showing up in the service of others.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Community outreach remains at the heart of our mission.

Through bike giveaway events, free mobile repair services, afterschool programming, and reservation partnerships, our goal was simple: remove obstacles so that more people can access bicycles and the opportunities that they present.

In 2025, we worked to make sure that access to bicycles, repair and classes was more available than ever, giving 1,782 bicycles to kids and folks in need, repairing 1,000 bicycles out in the community, and hosting 650+ kids and 300+ volunteers and at our largest ever Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway event!

Shifting Gears Program Expansion

In 2025, we expanded our Shifting Gears program to a second correctional facility in response to an urgent need in Idaho.

Idaho is the largest incarcerator of women in the nation - the large majority of whom are nonviolent offenders whose incarceration destabilizes families and perpetuates a cycle of generational trauma that impacts our entire community.

Our Shifting Gears program is a peer-led bicycle repair program that builds confidence, skills, and community among women who are preparing for reentry. They join us to help refurbish bicycles for kids, lead safety lessons at our new Traffic Garden, and have a BBP bicycle waiting to connect them to our community upon reentry.

aDVOCACY FOR SAFE STREETS

Giving a kid a bike is only the beginning. We believe every kid deserves to ride safely towards the opportunities ahead, and that requires streets designed with kids and families in mind.

This work has never been more urgent. Idaho is experiencing a 20-year high in traffic fatalities, while legislation has made it more difficult to build bike and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. In response, we doubled down on advocacy that centers safety, joy, and community.

In 2025, we celebrated two major wins for bicycle and pedestrian safety efforts. First, we opened Boise’s first permanent Traffic Garden at Ann Morrison Park in August, creating a space where families can ride together in a safe environment, and kids can learn bicycle safety through our BBP safety programming. Second, we also hosted Open Streets Boise in September, closing one mile of Ustick Road and welcoming more than 7,000 people to walk, bike, and roll together. We continue to challenge our community to reimagine what our streets could feel like every day if they put people first. Through advocacy, education, and inclusive events, we are building a community that is safe & welcoming for everyone!
