Volunteers for this shift help keep all of our programs running — helping to receive community donations, identifying which bikes can be refurbished and given away, and tearing apart bikes for components that can either go into the shop or used to repair another bike.

Whether you hope to build up bike mechanic skills or just want to have an impact on all of BBPs programs this is a great opportunity for new and returning volunteers alike!

Volunteer Mechanic

Volunteer Mechanics work to assist day to day shop operations as well as free bike programs. Shop operations include helping with walk ins and emergency repairs, as well as sorting parts and assisting mechanics in tasks. Programs operations include overhauling kids bikes for giveaways, preparing Urgent needs bikes for teens and adults as well as assisting in setting up for events.

When you arrive, you may be assigned to either recycle components off of bikes, refurbish kids bikes, or help customers in the shop but please know that no two days at the shop are the same so some flexibility may be required as we respond to whatever the biggest need is throughout the day.

Adult Mobile Fix-it

THIS WEEK WE WILL BE FIXING BIKES AT CATCH

These Mobile Fix-it stops serve individuals experiencing homelessness. Twice a month, we partner with the local nonprofit CATCH to offer free bike repairs to these vulnerable neighbors of ours who depend on their bikes for transportation.

We tackle a more extensive range of repairs at these stops then we do at our Youth Mobile Fix-it events so it is a good idea to refresh on brake systems, shifting adjustments, and similar repairs before signing up.

That being said, no-one should be scared off of this incredible stop. It is a rewarding opportunity and if there is any questions for how to best be prepared to help our program participants don't hesitate to reach out to our program director, Benton, at Benton@boisebicycleproject.org.

Shop Floor Volunteer Mechanic

Volunteer Shop Mechanics help with emergency repairs and other DIY repairs as customers come in - assisting BBP staff to manage the flow of traffic and help customers learn the repair needed for their bike.

There is BBP staff available to assist if you end up encountering something that is new to you, but it is advised that you attend a mechanics class series with us or refurbish a few bikes in the backroom of the shop before signing up with this shift to ensure you are comfortable with the type of repairs we assist with.

Shifts divide the day in half with two slots being available from 10:45 a.m. - 2 p.m. and two slots being available from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.

The shop floor can be a zany place, but it is where our collective mission really takes root. Come join us for all the fun!

Thursday Volunteer Night

BBP’s Social Hour (well, two hours)

Volunteers looking for a regular community can meet up weekly to work on the most pressing needs of the shop whether that is setting up for a bike giveaway, preparing for a special event, or working to keep bikes rolling.

  • We will start at 6pm and go until 8pm

  • Come prepared to get your hands dirty (and you may get your clothes dirty too!)

  • We recommend wearing clothes that you can get grease on and close-toed shoes

Mobile Fix-it

THIS WEEK WE WILL BE FIXING BIKES AT JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY

Welcome to the most fun program ever!

Every week,  BBP staff and volunteers go to a different school, apartment complex, or community center to provide free kid's repairs.

Whether you meet us at the stop or choose to help bike the Mobile Fix-It Cargo Bike and Repair Trailer through the neighborhood you are in for a great day.

There is little that is more immediately gratifying than teaching a kid how to fix their broken bike and seeing their excitement when they get to ride off.

Both mechanic and non mechanic volunteers are needed to repair bikes, sign kids in, collect data for the program, and oversee the flow of the event.
