Boise Bicycle Project – Consider joining the Board

FAQs

Do I need to have board experience to join the Board of Directors?

No, it is not a requirement. We are looking people who love bikes, cycling, and helping others. It is our goal to make Boise the cycling capital of America. You can be a key community leader in helping us reach that goal if you are enthusiastic. We are looking for members of the community with a variety of experiences to join us in this leadership role.

Do I need to have been a BBP volunteer or know how to fix bikes in order to join the Board?

We expect that new Board members will know about the organization and share our passion for the BBP mission. But you don’t necessarily have to have been involved as a volunteer and certainly don’t need to be a bike mechanic.

How long is the term?

The minimum term is 2 years. Board members can serve three consecutive terms (six years total). Some Board members then become “honorary” members.  There are a variety of committees and roles that you can get involved with.

What are the Board Member commitments if I join?

  • Be a member of BBP

  • Attend Board meetings every other month (six meetings annually)

  • Participate in a Board committee (current committees are Finance, Executive, Sustainability & Governance)

  • Participate in the Board Retreat (once a year)

  • Participate in events like the Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway

  • Be a good ambassador for BBP

  • Typically spend about four hours a month on Board work

  • Make friends, volunteer, and help with BBP work where you can

What is the purpose of the Board of Directors (BoD)?

All nonprofits have a Board of Directors to provide oversight, ensure there are sufficient resources, and bolster its identity across all communities. Great non-profits have dedicated, strategically minded, and passionate community members serving as board members.

What is the board looking for in new members?

We are looking for a wide variety of people to join the board.

  • We are committed to reflecting and honoring the diversity of the communities we serve. We welcome all and especially are seeking new members from historically underrepresented communities.

  • We are also looking for skills in many areas including accounting and finance, youth programs, education, legal, human relations, event management, writing, and more

If I join, can I get help learning the role?

Certainly; we can assign you a current member to be your contact for questions, sharing information, helping navigate the organization and resource.

As a member of the Board, would I have to make significant financial contributions?

BBP expects Board members to be members of the organization. If purchasing a membership is a problem, we can help with that. Beyond that, we expect Board members to donate an amount “meaningful” to them. While that includes financial support, it also includes time and talent.

Will you join us for the ride?
