Take Action: The ins and outs of Boise’s new Zoning Code Rewrite!

The city has been working hard to update and modernize our zoning regulations, with the goal of creating a more livable, sustainable, and equitable community for all.

So, what exactly is the new zoning code all about? In a nutshell, zoning codes serve as a mechanism for local governments to establish guidelines on permissible land uses and building activities. Boise's Comprehensive Plan sets forth a roadmap for the city's future, and zoning codes provide the means to enact this vision by regulating development within specific areas.

One of the key goals of the new zoning code is to promote more sustainable and equitable development throughout the city. To that end, the code includes provisions for things like affordable housing, and alternative transportation modes. It also encourages more mixed-use development, which can help create vibrant, walkable neighborhoods that offer a variety of housing options, job opportunities, and amenities. Furthermore, increasing housing options will help ensure that Boise remains an accessible and affordable place to live for people of all income levels.

Another important aspect of the new code is its emphasis on community engagement and input. The city held numerous public meetings and workshops throughout the drafting process to gather feedback from residents and stakeholders, and the final version of the code reflects many of the ideas and concerns raised during those sessions. This collaborative approach has helped ensure that the new code is responsive to the needs and desires of Boise's diverse communities. And the process is not over yet.

We are excited to announce that Boise Bicycle Project’s Board of Directors has signed on to an organizational letter of support for Boise’s Zoning Code Rewrite, and they need you to do the same!

BBP’s Board is really excited to support a zoning code that will help many of the communities that BBP works with. We see firsthand how important a bicycle or affordable housing can be to so many families on a daily basis. Cycling is also a great form of exercise, and a shift toward active transport (cycling and walking) leads to significant health and economic benefits for a community and lowers the risk of cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

If you care about active transportation and helping direct Boise’s growth more sustainably join the City of Boise public meetings next week: These meetings can be attended in person (at Boise City Hall), via Zoom, or watched live on YouTube. Please consider testifying to help support Boise’s growth in a sustainable and responsible manner from Tuesday onwards.
