Unlocking the Power of Your Cables and Housing: Inspecting/Servicing Brake and Shifter Cable Systems
Most people forget to check their cables and housing when they’re experiencing shifting or braking problems, but it should be the first thing you check. Cable housing is like a garden hose and your cables are like the water flowing through it, the more kinks and obstructions in the hose the worse the water flows.
In this class, we will teach you how to check your cables and housing for kinks and obstructions and replace them if needed.
Join the BBP Team: We’re Hiring!
We’re currently hiring part time mechanics to help refurbish used bikes and teach others how to repair and maintain their cycles. If you have the knowledge needed to teach others bike repair and a strong belief in the personal, social, and environmental benefits of bicycling, we need you! Check out the Bicycle Mechanic Position here for more information and how to apply. You can also come by the shop to fill out an application and get involved. If you need to brush up on your mechanics but aspire to better Boise through bicycling, volunteering is a great way to get started at the BBP!
Scrap Metal Pickups Needed!
When a bike gets donated to the BBP, we make sure that everything useful on it is reused. However, the broken frames and parts that can’t be re-purposed add up quick and every week we end up with a sizable pile of scrap metal. We’re seeking volunteers to help us haul scrap from the BBP to Pacific Steel & Recycling on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis. Funds raised from the scrap can go back to the BBP or be donated to another awesome non-profit. Volunteers need to provide their own truck (having a trailer helps, too). Help us keep bikes and bike parts out of landfills!
Volunteer with BBP
September’s Kid’s B.A.S.H. giveaway is this Saturday so all week long we’ll be looking for volunteers to assist us in having all the bikes tuned up and ready to go by the weekend. You can sign up here to come in during open hours and help build up some kids bikes, or click here if you’d rather come in on Saturday morning and lend a hand passing out bikes at the event.
In addition to the B.A.S.H. on Saturday, we’ll be at the Capitol City Public Market providing free valet bike parking as well as a DIY repair stand. We’ll need a couple of folks to help with manning the BBP booth as well as parking bikes for market goers. Click here to help out, it'll be a great time!
Also, we’ve got a number of construction projects piling up around the shop. If you have any handyman or handywoman experience we’ve got plenty of ways for you to help out. Our Tues. and Thurs. 6-8 volunteer nights are a great time to come in wrench on a things that aren’t bikes.
Lastly, Primary Health’s big bike drive is only a few weeks away and in the meantime we’ll be calling out to anyone with a truck or a trailer to assist with donation pick-ups. Email Aaron, our volunteer coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on how you can help get those bikes to the shop and back in to the community!
