Volunteering at BBP

There are many opportunities for everyone to volunteer, regardless of experience or expertise. BBP is a place where you can build and share skills in a non threatening environment while meeting amazing people and making a huge difference in the community. Even if you don’t want to work on bikes, we want to harvest your other skills for the good of “hu”man kind.

Here’s how to get started...

  1. 1.Attend a Volunteer Orientation

Orientations are held on the 1st Saturday of every month at 10:30 am. The 1 hour orientation

certifies you to begin volunteering at the Boise Bicycle Project.  It’s fun, informative, and a great

introduction to cooperative bicycle maintenance. Space is limited, so.....

    Register by clicking HERE.

Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome, and those who are 15 and older can attend without parental supervision. If you are under 18 years old, please download ourVOLUNTEER PROGRAM release.docx and have a parent or guardian sign it before you come.

  1. 2.Volunteer

After you’ve completed the orientation, you can volunteer during our weekly Drop in Volunteer

Night, Wednesday 6:00 – 8:00 pm. or check out some of our other volunteer opportunities below.

  1. 3.Have Fun and Learn

We want you to have a great time at BBP, which is pretty darn easy since we always have a lot of fun, but we also want you to have as much access to bicycle education as you can handle. Volunteering is a great way to learn, and BBP has several volunteer opportunities, like the Chain Gang program, for volunteers looking to take their volunteering to the next level. Read all about the Chain Gang and BBP’s other volunteer programs below.

Volunteer Jobs

Drop In Volunteer Every Wednesday from 6-8pm, BBP hosts a drop in volunteer night for folks who’ve completed an orientation and are ready to get their hands dirty. Every wednesday a list task will be on the volunteer board that will significantly help BBP and it’s mission to get more people on bikes. Jobs may include: organizing parts, disassembling bikes, construction, repairing kid’s bikes for donation, printing and mailing, cleaning bikes, greeting, and so much more. Click here for more Drop in Volunteer details.

Drop In Greeter Every Wednesday, during the Drop in Volunteer Night 6-8pm, BBP needs someone who can hang out at the front counter to welcome people as they come in, check out tool boxes, assist with log in, and point folks in the right direction. This job requires no experience, but we do request you attend a volunteer orientation first to become familiar with the shop. We also request you sign up for a greeting shift at least 1 week ahead of time and try to arrive a few minutes before 6pm. This is a great way to meet lots of incredible people. Click here to sign up for a greeting shift.

Kid B.A.S.H.er Don’t let the name fool you, you will not be “bashing” kids. On the 2nd Saturday of every month BBP hosts a Bicycle Skills and Safety Hour in which kids attend a 1 hour class in order to receive a free bicycle and helmet from BBP. We need extra hands during the B.A.S.H. from 9:30 – 11am. Duties will include manning safety stations, fitting helmets, and helping with the bike donation process afterwards. No experience is necessary, and this is a great team building activity for groups. Please sign up a week ahead of time if you can help by clicking here.

Chain Gang Volunteers AKA “the Navy Seals of BBP Volunteers.”

The Chain Gang is a group of dedicated volunteers who are able to refurbish bicycles as well as help both volunteers and customers in the shop.  Chain Gang volunteers have an excellent understanding of BBP policy as well as the ability to complete the Ready To Ride Checklist independently. If you are interested in taking your volunteering and mechanic skills to the next level please click here and we’ll contact you shortly about the next step, or ask us about becoming Chain Gang member at the next Volunteer night or orientation. Once certified, Chain Gang members are able to volunteer- Wednesday - Saturday 12:00 – 6:00 pm  Click Here to see the official CHANG GANG page

Lady Wrencher THIS JOB IS FOR LADIES ONLY. Once a month BBP hosts a special Ladies only open shop time. The evening features an optional volunteer orientation, classes, special volunteer projects, and regular open shop activities. BBP needs lady mechanics to assist with these evenings. Some experience is preferred and can be acquired by attending regular volunteer orientations or by attending a couple Ladies Wrench night classes as a participant until you get the hang of it. Please sign up for shifts (6-8pm) at least 1 week ahead of time by clicking here.

Bike Collector BBP is always in need of bikes to fix and distribute to the community in need. There are often folks in the valley who have bicycles to donate, but do not have the means to deliver them to the shop. If you are over 25 years old and would like to help deliver bicycle to BBP, please click here to be added to the Bike Collector contact list.

Want to collect a lot of bikes?

Hosting a bike drive in your neighborhood, office, or school is easy, tons of fun, and extremely beneficial to the community. It is also a great project for Eagle Scouts and team building exercises. Want to host a bike drive? Click here to find out how easy it is

Special Event Volunteers BBP is constantly throwing amazing events, (Christmas Kids Bike Giveaway, Tour De Fat, Pedal 4 the People, Helladrome, The Bicycle Block Party, Bike to the Future...... the list goes on) and we always need extra help. No experience is necessary, just have fun. You can become an official BBP “roadie” and have the time of your life, while helping out the community. Click here if you want to party with the pit crew.

Bike Valet BBP does bike valet parking for all sorts of events throughout the valley. They are great fundraisers, great ways to promote BBP, and great ways to encourage bike riding to events. We are often unable to fulfill the mass requests for bike valet parking and need your help to change that. Bike Valet parkers can be trained in under 5 minutes and almost alway end up being free ways to listen concerts, eat great food, and meet other cyclist. If you are interested in Bike Valet Parking at future events, please click here.

If there are other ways you feel you could help out at BBP, please give us a call 208-429-6520 or click here to tell us all about it

A message to our hard working volunteers- Winners of Boise’s Best Local Non Profit.

Congratulations! On behalf of the community, thank you so much for enriching others'  lives, not only with a new-to-them bicycle, but also the camaraderie that occurs between volunteers. Nothing is so pure as the heart of a volunteer. Thanks for your community spirit.
