Boise Bicycle Project’s elite group of volunteers who wear the prestigious Green Apron.
The Chain Gang is a group of “Rag Tag” volunteers who are able to refurbish bicycles, assist with new volunteers/customers, help out at events and do a 360 slam dunk on a 10ft hoop.

Chain Gang volunteers have an excellent understanding of BBP mission, goals, and can complete the Ready To Ride Checklist independently.

If you are interested in taking your volunteering and mechanic skills to the next level please e-mail Nate at volunteer@boisebicycleproject.org , or ask us about becoming Chain Gang member at the next Volunteer night or orientation.

Eric Schulz

Am in my 52nd year of bike riding.

Where you grew up: Have lived from Texas to Chicago to Porland to Moscow, but family and I have called Boise home for 30-plus years.

What brought you to BBP: Am one of the "old guys" that volunteer at the BBP - I enjoy helping folks out with their bike work, putting parts in order, and I learn something every time I come in.

A little about yourself:  I work as a consulting engineer for CH2M HILL and commute to work by by bike 365 days a year - I always say:  "the worst day on my bike is almost always better than the best day in my car."  Although it gets a bit nippy at 10-below.

What you're riding on: During the riding season, I put 50 miles a week on my mountain bike up in the foothills, mostly in the Sidewinder-Freestone-Watchman-Three Bears area. My daughter and I just mountain-biked the first 170 miles of the Idaho Centennial Trail.

BBP’s Original Chang Gang Member

Where you grew up: Native Idahoan- always been a Vandal (McCall and U of I)

A little about yourself:  Built my first bmx bike up at age 10 from the frame up and never looked back.  I commute year around and build up old bikes for fun.  My non-bike life includes a great family who prides itself in never being home on the weekends- skiing, camping, etc....

What you're riding on: Too many to list, but my Xtracycle cargo bike and my Talisman road bike (purchased from BBP) are my go to bikes.

Andoni Eck

The Go To Guy

Where you grew up: I grew up in the foothills of Boise, ID

What brought you to BBP: biking has always been a major part of my life. However, until my senior year in high school I knew nothing about how to maintain my bike. I went to Bishop Kelly and as part of my graduation requirements I had to complete 30 hours of community service. Some of my friends had volunteered at the Boise Bicycle Project and thought that it would be a great place for me to do my hours. As I completed my hours I not only learned how to repair a bicycle but also how much a bike can change someone’s life. Everyone at the shop is extremely nice and helpful, and soon I felt at home.

A little about yourself:  As I spent more and more time at “the bike shop” I learned more and more skills. Eventually I decided to build up my own bike from scratch. I chose to build up a 1972 Huffy Super 10. It takes a lot of time and patience but it give you a sense of accomplishment knowing that you can fix (almost) any problem that arises with your bike.  Next fall I will be attending Colorado School of Mines to study biochemical engineering, and although I will no longer be in Boise, I will most certainly be on a bike.

Message to future volunteers:  "Volunteering at the Boise Bicycle Project has exponentially increased my love for biking and my ability to care for my bike."

2011 Volunteer of the Year

Where you grew up: I was born in St. Louis, MO and lived there for 50 years. All evidence indicates that I have not grown up. My wife and I moved to Boise in 2002

A little about yourself:  My wife and I moved to Boise in 2002. I recently retired from my job as a computer programmer and intend to spend my time with various volunteer efforts and enjoying life. When I'm not biking in Boise, I enjoy hiking and climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing, alpine and downhill skiing.

What you're riding on: I love old school bikes.  My personal bikes include a Raleigh Rapide (my first rebuild job), a Gary Fisher Big Sur (mountain bike that doesn't get much use), a Specialized Hard Rock (another rebuild I have Xtracycle plans for), a generic cruiser (my fun bike), and a Raleigh C40 hybrid (my working bike).
